Gloss vs Matte Lipsticks – Understanding the Difference

Gloss vs Matte Lipsticks – Understanding the Difference

Lipsticks come in different textures and finishes. Gloss and matte lipsticks are most loved by women. While some women like to keep it simple with light shades of matte lipsticks, others swear by glosses for that extra shine. So, now let’s understand the difference between the two. How is the gloss lipstick different from the matte one? Which one is better, and which one should be worn when? Here, in this guide, we will try to establish the difference between gloss and matte lipsticks.

1. Gloss and matte lipsticks
Matte lipstick has opaque, deep pigments, which give a more natural finish to your lips. A matte lipstick does not make the lips appear shiny. However, a gloss lipstick has a natural shine as it has glitters or shimmers in it. These are best for those who do not want to use colored lipsticks. You can wear your gloss lipstick individually or over any traditional pigmented lipstick. Glosses also come in tinted colors.

2. Effect
Deep-colored matte lipsticks might make the lips appear thinner. So, if you already have fuller lips and want to tone them down a bit, the matte lipstick should be your go-to pick. Gloss lipsticks are a preferred pick by women who have small lips. These lip accentuators add a sense of fullness, depth, and dimension to the lips.

3. Lasting power
There are days when you might want the lipstick to stay for a couple of hours. On some days, you wish to be more carefree with your lipstick choices. But, which one is a better pick? Well, it all depends on your preferences. Relatively, the matte lipstick will last longer than the gloss lipstick because these lipsticks are relatively more pigmented. If you are wearing a gloss, you have to ensure to carry it along with you as glosses do not have great lasting power.

4. Hydration
Matte lipsticks do not hydrate your lips, whereas gloss lipsticks have a moisturizing formula. You will have to apply a moisturizing lip balm before you go for a matte lipstick. Glosses can be worn without any lip prep. The details are explained in the next point.

5. Application
A matte lipstick, when applied, dries down faster as it does not have any moisturizing element in it. Hence, one needs to wear a lip balm or a moisturizing lip cream that can prevent cracked or chapped lips after the matte lipstick application. The application process is a little extensive compared to the gloss application. Most glosses are hydrating; therefore, they do not need extensive lip prep. It glides smoothly on your lips.

Although there is a significant difference between the two lipsticks, you can choose both according to your preference.
